The German word “Kaputt” is used to specify anything that is broken, fallen to bits, not working the way it should. And the video of “Kaputt”, seen until the end, seems to be just about that. Don’t be fooled by those first shots that make you think of “Revenge of the Nerds” (with their acne, prim hair, pieces of snot and horn-rimmed glasses, yes, but attended to by a group of young healthy-looking ladies who we’d find it hard to say no to), because there’s a twist, and everything becomes a fantasy. That’s what Destroyer is talking about on “Kaputt”: things that stop working, situations that change, dreams and fantasies as an escape from a reality that is almost always uglier and hits ever harder. On the streets on 25th January via Merge.
