The video of “Abducted” is out now, the first advance track from Cults’ upcoming eponymous debut album, to be released on 30th May on Columbia. Despite the beauty of their music, with those jaw-dropping vocal exercises between Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, the couple has taken the lyrics of the song, a tale of cut-off love and broken hearts, as the inspiration for a mini film noir. A man, a spiteful lover we believe, ties a woman’s hands and kidnaps her (hence, the title), taking her on “a ride” in the trunk of a car. In the end, the roles are reversed. He frees her and she ties him up and throws him in the trunk. A nod to sadism? To the giving and taking in any romantic relationship? To the power games established during sex? To romantic dependence? What’s clear is that these young’uns aren’t as innocent as they seem.
San Miguel Primavera Sound 2011 takes place on 25 and 29 May at Poble Español, and from 26 to 28 May at Parc del Forum in Barcelona. Tickets are on sale here.
