Optimo Reissues Peter Zummo
Listen to an extract of “Song IV”, with Arthur Russell on the cello
JD Twitch is still digging up 80s gems. After reclaiming Psyche, the brain behind Optimo Music has set his eyes on Peter Zummo - specifically his “Song IV”, a 20-minute composition originally released in 1981 on his first album, “Zummo With An X”. A trombone player interested in the experimental, Zummo recorded that album as a trio, with Arthur Russell on the cello and Bill Ruyle on the Indian tabla. The result was an exploratory, rhizomatous, meditative work oscillating between the worlds of chamber music and free jazz. The song, in its original form (a glorious twenty minutes, with sound re-mastered for the occasion) will see the light of day as a 12” in early June.
